The Tools May Change, but People Come First

AI seems to be everywhere these days. Every industry is talking about it. Everyone is wondering how it can help, what it can change, and whether it will replace the human touch.

Hearing these conversations today reminds me of another time in my career back in the early 2000s, before I owned the lab. CAD/CAM technology was just getting started. I remember the worry in the air. My co-workers wondered, “Will this machine take my job? Will we still be needed?”

When I purchased the lab in 2008, I made a big decision: I invested in CAD/CAM technology. But just as important as the purchase itself was how I handled it. I didn’t want to surprise my team with a shiny new piece of equipment in the corner and leave them wondering about their future. I let everyone know in advance. I explained why I was bringing it in, and I reassured them that I wanted us to learn it together.

I knew another lab owner who did the opposite. He rolled in his new CAD/CAM system without telling his staff ahead of time. His employees felt blindsided and unvalued. I wanted to take a different path. To me, leadership meant making sure people were included and respected.

That experience shapes how I approach my work even today. Technology will always change, but trust and communication don’t. Whether it’s with my team back then or with the doctors I serve today, I make it a point to stay in touch, listen, and ask for feedback before making changes.

At the end of the day, tools like CAD/CAM or AI, are just that — tools. What makes the difference is the people behind them and the relationships we build.
