Our Story

In the 80’s Darrell worked at his parents' local general store in Richmond, California that they owned for over 30 years. It was there that Darrell learned the value of building relationships and helping. His parents taught him to help all their customers in any way possible. To read more, Click Here
What was most memorable were the interactions his parents had with every one that walked through the doors and how happy they were. He was especially fascinated by how engaged each customer was with his dad and mom as they worked the register. This sparked his ambitions to someday own a business of his own.
1991 - Robert (Bob) Powers purchases Berkeley Dental Laboratory | 2nd owner
1992 - During Darrell's last year in dental school, he gets hired at Berkeley Dental Laboratory as an entry level position, doing daily pickup/deliveries and model work. While visiting each dental office every day, he was building relationships with doctors and their staff, just like how his parents taught him at their store. Darrell worked alongside Bob and learned every position of the dental lab. He worked his way up to lab manager, which led to him being trusted to do quality control on all cases, before they were shipped out to their doctors' offices.

2008 - Bob was ready to step away. Darrell purchased Berkeley Dental Laboratory and became the 3rd owner. Darrell rebranded and took Berkeley Dental Laboratory in a new direction, by changing the logo and updating the lab by installing new digital CAD/CAM equipment to serve more doctors.
One of the best things about the lab’s location, is that it has given Darrell the opportunity to plan cases chair-side with their doctors and patients. It’s been rewarding to be there in person to see them happy with the results of the final restorations — to experience their work delivered clinically has been invaluable!
As Darrell looks back as he worked on building his future, there have been many people who have tried to dissuade him from moving forward with his dreams and goals; from the college counselor who suggested he choose a different career path, to everyone telling him not to take over the lab in 2008 — the worst year to purchase a business, he would often hear.
Darrell is so glad he did not listen, because today he gets his joy from working with all his doctors. He continues to help his doctors find the joy in their work again, ensuring they end their day on a positive note — confident that they provide their patients with excellent experiences and optimal outcomes during cement appointments.
