We Get to Put Smiles on Our Patients' Faces

February is here, and with it comes a fun and nostalgic celebration: Tooth Fairy Day! As I sit down to write this, I can’t help but think about how this day brings back fond memories from my childhood, especially since I have a 9-year-old daughter who still has a few more teeth to lose. The excitement that builds when a child loses a tooth is something special. That magical moment when the tooth fairy leaves a surprise under the pillow — a crisp dollar bill — always brings a smile and a sense of wonder. It’s a joy that never quite fades, no matter how old you get.

As adults, we no longer get money under our pillows, but we do get something just as valuable: a new tooth. The excitement and joy that adults feel when receiving a new dental restoration can be just as powerful as that childhood thrill. We aim to bring that same joy to our patients. Just like the tooth fairy places a little surprise under your pillow, we get to provide a little surprise in the form of high-quality restorations that bring a smile back to our patients’ faces.

Dental restorations are so much more than just a fix for a damaged tooth. They’re an opportunity for patients to regain confidence in their smiles, to feel comfortable again in social settings, and to live their lives with the self-confidence that they deserve. Just like that dollar bill brought excitement as a child, a new restoration we make can be a source of joy and pride for our patients. We take great pride in the work we do, knowing the positive impact it has on a person’s overall well-being and happiness.

Recently, I had the privilege of helping a patient in a way that really reminded me of that magic. A new doctor reached out to me — one I had never worked with before — and asked for my help with a difficult case. His patient had been to another lab several times in an attempt to match the shade of a single front tooth, but each crown made had not quite met her expectations. She wasn’t satisfied with the color match, even after multiple attempts. The doctor called me to see if I could help, and asked if his patient could come to my lab for a new shade match.

When she arrived, I took the time to carefully check her shade inside my lab and outside with natural light. I gave her a mirror to make sure she was happy with the chosen shade. I’m thrilled to say that the moment she saw it, she was overjoyed with how it turned out. It was exactly what she had been hoping for. Even more satisfying was hearing from the doctor, who was not only relieved but also impressed that I was able to get it just right on the first try. This doctor now regularly sends cases my way and it's been great working together with his practice.

It’s a little like the tooth fairy — no one sees me working behind the scenes. The patient doesn’t know who crafted their restoration or how it came to life. But in this case, I had the special opportunity of witnessing that moment of joy firsthand, seeing how my work brought a smile back to her face.
